Maz from Maz Lifestyle

1. When was @Mazlifestyle born & what drew you to start this Instagram account?

Maz Lifestyle began a decade ago when my children set up my Instagram account to complement my personal blog page. Originally a platform for sharing my interests and creativity, it marked a significant shift, as wasn't active on social media ten years ago, except for using Facebook to stalk my children at boarding school. As I explored Instagram, I noticed influencers representing my age group, but I struggled to relate to them. Feeling frustrated by the lack of representation that resonated with how I looked and felt, I eventually gathered the courage to authentically present myself. Putting myself out there on Instagram was a pivotal moment, unknowingly shaping the path forward for Maz Lifestyle to evolve.

2. What has your family & working life looked like over the years?

Over the last 14 years my husband was managing a large-scale cotton cropping and stock property. I've taken on diverse roles, from parts runs and fuelling operations to mustering stock, driving tractors, and cooking for harvest crews. I was jack of all trades. Alongside this, I juggled the responsibilities of being a mum to four children who attend boarding school ten hours away, I was frequently making solo trips for school events. Living in a small remote community, I've been actively involved in various committees while also nurturing my creative interests. Additionally, during the last 7 years, we welcomed eight grandchildren, with number nine due in October. In the past three years, we decided to reassess our professional lives. After managing a demanding large-scale irrigation farming operation for 14 years, which took a toll physically and mentally, especially with recent health challenges my husband faced, we decided to explore options for our future. We also moved into town to our 100-year-old cottage which we are currently renovating. When my husband taking on a role with a local stock and station agent, and our farm responsibilities behind us, I finally had uninterrupted time throughout the day to focus on what I love most—Maz Lifestyle

3. When did your passion for fashion begin?

My passion for fashion began at a very young age when my beautiful late mother, Peggy, taught me to sew around the age of six – I’ve been sewing, designing, and creating my own clothes since then. When my first daughter turned one, I enrolled in a 12-month TAFE night course comprehensively learning all the aspects of sewing, which was one of the best decisions I ever made for myself. It gave me invaluable knowledge and skills, enabling me to embark on more challenging projects and designs. I love how clothing has the power to completely transform how you feel from the inside out.

4. What has been your favourite Fella Hamilton garment or accessory worn?

Geez it’s hard to pick just one because I love everything from Fella Hamilton. At the moment, the pieces I have on high rotation are, the Nero Poncho, Possum Roll Neck Jumper, matching Possum Moss Stitch Longline Wrap, and Eleanor Pendant Necklace. I love them for their comfort, style, colours, and how they just look so damn good, styled up or down!

5. What is the best style advice you’ve ever received?

The number one fashion rule is: “There are no rules.” Always wear what you want to wear, and don’t let fashion or body size dictate your wardrobe. If you're not comfortable in your own skin, you won't be comfortable in your own clothes; style and confidence come from knowing yourself and wearing what makes you feel good.

6. What are your wardrobe essentials?

Living in the outback, these items are my go-to as they can be dressed up of down, or layered for any situation: Good pair of straight leg jeans Navy jumper White shirt Boots Fedora hat

7. What do you love about living in outback Australia?

What I love about living in outback Australia is the wide-open spaces that offer ultimate peace and quiet. The strong sense of community and belonging, along with enduring friendships, is truly special. Endless road trip adventures reveal the beauty of native flora and fauna, while at night, the expansive starlit skies and bonfires create a magical atmosphere.

8. What inspires you?

Knowing that I'm authentically helping women, without any sense of being forced or fake, is incredibly rewarding. From receiving messages of gratitude to seeing the encouragement for perseverance, I see women inspired and rediscovering themselves as they navigate midlife through what I share. Their journey of self-discovery and empowerment is all the encouragement and inspiration I need to continue.

9. What daily habits help you maintain balance in your busy life?

With two of my daughters living nearby and my grandchildren attending the local primary school, I get to see them almost every day—whether it's after school drop-off or pickup. These daily connections brighten my day and remind me of how grateful and blessed I am to be so closely involved in their lives.

10. What do you love doing in your spare time?

Aside from cherishing moments with my family and friends, one of my greatest joys is sewing and quilting. There's a special fulfillment in discovering exquisite fabrics and using them to design and craft clothing or create one-of-a-kind quilts, especially for my grandchildren—I've made two so far and look forward to making six more.

11. What do you never leave home without?

Sunscreen and sunglasses, given how much time I spend outdoors. Additionally, I always carry a large water bottle, especially since I often find myself driving long distances.

12. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to follow in your social media footsteps?

It hasn't been an overnight journey; it took me a decade to reach where I am today, driven by my deep passion for what I do. It's about dedicating countless hours to acquiring new skills and delving deep within to unearth the hidden treasures. Mistakes have been made, but each one has been a valuable lesson, guiding and shaping my path. Trusting my instincts and staying true to my unique path, I've learned to forge ahead, staying in my own lane and embracing my authentic approach.

13. How do you use your platform to make a positive impact?

I find immense fulfillment in knowing that my Instagram page positively impacts mature women who may feel invisible or adrift. Transitioning from raising four children and managing a bustling household to becoming empty nesters and a grandmother, I embarked on a journey to rediscover myself beyond the roles of mother, wife, and grandmother. Rediscovering "Maz" has been deeply rewarding, and by sharing my journey, I aim to inspire others to embark on their own paths of self-discovery and empowerment.

14. What upcoming projects or goals are you most excited about?

I'm thrilled about our upcoming inaugural Maz Lifestyle cruise in October along Queensland's coast, where 80 of my followers will join. We've organised a welcoming cocktail party onboard and secured a venue for a fashion parade, showcasing some of Fella Hamilton’s stunning garments. Followers will have the chance to become models for a day and strut their stuff, with exciting offshore activities also planned. It's shaping up to be a fabulous and fun-filled event—our chat board is abuzz with excitement! All the organisation has been a massive effort, but it’s definitely worth it, and hope it will be an annual event.
